Disclaimer: Do NOT read this review if you have not read ACOTAR, ACOMAF or ACOWAR. Book: A Court of Wings and Ruin
Author: Sarah J Maas
Page Number: 699 Pages
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: 3/ 5 stars

Note: If you are a Sarah J Maas stan or an ACOTAR series fan, this review is probably not for you. I just finished reading ACOWAR and I’m using this space to rant.

I’ve never gotten why people get so hyped over Sarah J Maas’s books.

This book only raises my confusion.

I’ll agree that ACOWAR is better than ACOMAF, (even if I gave it a lower rating than ACOMAF), I didn’t like several aspects of this book, hence the 3 stars.

Here is my rant:

  1. Characters:
  • Rhysand: I’m sorry to say this but he has the personality of a brick. He only does two things in the entirety of the book: Flirt with Feyre or become a martyr and wish to self sacrifice himself. Where did the Rhysand from the first book go? This one only cackles at Feyre’s poor jokes (once or twice is fine but she could do literally anything and Rhysand would smirk, or Feyre would feel laughter down the mating bond and etc.). I know this is a super unpopular opinion.. but Rhysand, for me, is bland in ACOMAF and ACOWAR.
  • Feyre:  A lot of her actions annoyed me. ALSO can we please talk about what a hypocrite she is? She spent the entire second book and even the beginning of the third book complaining how no one in the Spring Court helped her even when they knew she was suffering. Then in the beginning of the third book, there is a guard getting 21 lashes (for no reason but stupid Ianthe set him up). Feyre did NOTHING to help him. She had the full capability of stopping the lashes or at least taking away the guard’s pain with her powers much like how Rhysand did in the first book. But she chose to do nothing. And THEN she had the AUDACITY on the next page to expect an apology from the other guards in the court for letting her suffer in ACOMAF. I was angry because Feyre expected the guard to help her when she’s in pain but she doesn’t extend that courtesy when there was a guard in front of her getting whipped? Hypocrite much? Anyways, onto the next point. I found it hilarious that every time Feyre opened her mouth to speak, everyone else would act as if she was a goddess speaking the most wisest words in the world. In reality, her “words of wisdom” were actually quite plain. Sarah J Maas usually writes this so then she can write in the next sentence: “She felt pride through the mating bond.”. Wow….. Feyre could literally ramble about anything and Rhysand and the Inner Circle would listen to those words as if they were the most precious thing they’ve ever heard. For example, when Feyre and Lucien are running from Lucien’s brother and Cassian and Azriel finally come to the rescue, Feyre says: “I am the High Lady of the Night Court.” The very next sentence was something like: “Feyre could feel the pride coming off of Cassian”. WHY? She merely stated a fact that was less than ten words… Why was Cassian reacting like she stated some fancy monologue?
Another scene that ticked me off was when Feyre ran off to the Suriel without telling Mor where she was going. When Mor got mad at her and told her that she was going out of her mind because she was worried for Feyre, Feyre’s response was so unrelated and unnecessary. She basically spun it back to Mor and was like: SO WHAT?? YOU HAVE FEELINGS FOR AZRIEL! Uhhh… what does that have anything to do with the conversation?
Sidenote: This is getting long but whatever happened to Feyre’s painting skills?
“The movement was so perfect that I knew I’d one day paint it.”
I haven’t seen Feyre paint since she returned from the Spring Court. I get she’s busy with the war and stuff, but she wasn’t too busy to keep from flirting with Rhysand.
  • Nesta: Loved her… but the “I’m too cool for you” act was getting a bit tiresome by the end
  • Elain: Is she even relevant to this story?
  • AMREN: I LOVE HER.. that’s it. No rant here.
  • Varian: Amren and him were so random. Not everyone needs a love interest.
  • My Mate: I saw someone say that there were about 200 “My mate” quotes in this book. Every time this “m” word was mentioned, it made me almost rip out my hair. Enough said.
  • Hybern: When SJM said “Hybern” what did she even mean? Hybern stands for the king, the kingdom, the location, etc. So whenever she just said “Hybern”, which she did countless times, I was so confused. Which meaning of the word was she referencing?
  • Nesta’s Powers: Am I the only one confused on the specifics of Nesta’s powers? I get her powers are about death but what specifically can she do?
  • THE ENDING: I could rant about the ending for days! The ending was just so….lame
Hello? I thought this was a high stakes war! And not a single soul dies? Not even Amren who SJM JUST HAD TO REVIVE FROM THE DEAD?! I love Amren but that ending was such a bad way to conclude. It was like a gift wrapped up in bows. Rhysand was dead and there was no way he could have possibly come back to life since he was already Fae. The spell from all the high lords shouldn’t have worked but WHY NOT MAKE IT WORK since you WANT TO GIVE US A PERFECT ENDING!!! Amren literally sacrificed herself and died beautifully. AND THEN SHE CAME TO LIFE AGAIN! It took away the entire meaning of her death! Oh and all the super powerful creatures that were actually somewhat interesting (Bone Carver, Weaver) were killed off in seconds. Wow… just wow. And you’re telling me, that when all those creatures died, Elane magically survived and was able to kill the king? Ok then….
  • Confusing Plot: I’m so glad that this book actually had a plot unlike ACOMAF and ACOTAR. It had action scenes and actually kept me from going insane and rating this book a one star. The plot made this book interesting. However, the plans in this book made no sense whatsoever. Didn’t Amren tell everyone that if the Bone Carver were to come out of the prison, it would just have to bind itself to a normal Fae body? Then how was it able to come out as the Bone Carver in the end? This is just one of the many things I’m confused about in this book.

To sum it up, I did not particularly love this series. It was ok. I don’t get the hype over these characters because they all seem pretty bland to me. The first book (ACOTAR) was the only good one. It only went downhill from there.

Book review for a court of mist and fury

Book: A Court of Mist and Fury
Author: Sarah J Maas
Page Number: 656 Pages
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: 3.5 / 5 stars

“When you spend so long trapped in darkness, Lucien, you find that the darkness begins to stare back.”

Ok where do I start? I have so many thoughts on this book….to put it simply, I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first one. Don’t get me wrong, I was hooked on ACOMAF from the beginning but despite it having a little bit more action than the last one, I found myself downright angry and frustrated to the max at some parts, which I will explain further down in this review.

Synopsis: Post Acotar and the war with Amarantha, Feyre has found herself still traumatized from the events that happened Under the Mountain. In addition, trouble is brewing in Prythian. Amarantha was only the beginning and there are much worse things in store for the Fae. Feyre realizes that she holds the power that may be the key to save them all.

“I was not a pet, not a doll, not an animal.
I was a survivor, and I was strong.
I would not be weak, or helpless again
I would not, could not be broken. Tamed.”

This book made me so furiated at times so right off the bat, here are the things I didn’t like about this book: (Sorry if this comes off as harsh- no hate to those who love ACOMAF but in my opinion, here are the parts I didn’t like about this book)

  1. SJM ruining characters: Can someone please tell SJM that she doesn’t need to ruin characters like Tamlin (And Choal in TOG)  in order for us to like her other love interests? It’s so not necessary! It was very obvious that the Tamlin in this book is a completely different character than the one in ACOTAR. Why? What was the need to ruin him? Falling out of love is perfectly normal… there was no need to demolish Tamlin’s character to get Feyre and Rhysand together. This just angers me. Authors should be able to make us fall for the other love interest without destroying the first love interest. This was just plain manipulation and left me with no choice but to ship Feyre and Rhysand (Still love Rhysand and Feyre though).
  2. Feyre: Honestly I could rant about her all day. In the beginning, my heart pained for her and what she was going through. That sympathy vanished soon enough. First of all, did it not even cross her mind that Tamlin was going through PTSD from Under the Mountain as well? Rhys, Feyre and Tamlin all suffered and were reflecting on in their own ways. Tamlin’s first instinct was to protect Feyre because he couldn’t do so before. Rhys acted differently because he experienced something different. He let Feyre make her own choices because he understood what it was like to be unable to make decisions for yourself. Tamlin and Rhysand went through different things and so it is natural they responded in different ways after it. Then Feyre had the NERVE to compare them? I get one or two comparisons but she compared the two of the males once every page. Ugh Tamlin would never let me go along on this mission but Rhysand is perfect and he lets me go along! Sigh. It got so tedious… like we get it! SJM obviously put all those comparisons to show how much Rhysand is Mr. Perfect while showing that Tamlin is a piece of trash. The reader can make these comparisons by themselves….
Spoiler: It was completely unacceptable for Tamlin to lock up Feyre and I would do the same thing Feyre did if I was her. But what I’m mad about is how much Feyre victimized herself while portraying Tamlin as the bad guy when both of them went through horrible experiences.

  1. Plot is nonexistent: If I thought ACOTAR had little plot, this one’s plot was nonexistent. At least in ACOTAR, I could give you a clear step by step summary of what happens in that book. ACOMAF was all over the place. First of all, where was the action? Where was the villain? There’s some awesome, powerful villain in Hybern and we only see him in the last 20 pages? And when we do see him, he just lets Feyre and everyone go as soon as they come in because that’s realistic. Excuse me? I was promised a very powerful King. Seriously, what a missed opportunity! I was expecting an epic fight scene with the King of Hybern. SJM writes fight scenes really well (Throne of Glass fight scenes are very well written), so it struck me as a surprise when there was no action. This whole book was basically Feyre realizing her feelings for Rhysand. (It was fun at first but when the whole book revolves around this romance, it became beyond boring.)
  2. Mr. Perfect Rhysand: Ok, don’t get me wrong, I love Rhysand but where was the mysterious man from the first book. The Rhysand in the previous book was cunning and mysterious and interested me. The Rhysand in this book bored me in the second half. Gone was his deviousness and mysteriousness and in came his “perfect” qualities. In the effort to make us all love Rhysand and hate Tamlin, SJM made Rhysand too perfect, with no flaws. I wish he was just like the Rhys in the first book and then later in the ACOMAF, we get past his shells and see his true self. Instead, right away in the first hundred pages we suddenly got introduced to a new Rhys.
  3. SPOILERS (Skip this paragraph): The dream where Rhysand knew Feyre was his mate was disappointing. I just hoped that Rhysand had taken time to fall in love with her after he got to know her in ACOMAF. Instead it was kind of like he suspected the whole time she was his mate and it just felt less romantic…. (Also when does Feyre feel the mating bond? Rhysand felt it at the end of ACOTAR and doubled in pain because of it. Will this not happen to Feyre or will it happen in ACOWAR?)
  4. Too Graphic: Uhhh chapter 55? Chapter 48? Chapter 2? Too graphic and I’m just going to leave this there as a warning for those who haven’t read the book yet.

Questions (SKIP FOR SPOILERS):
  1. Ash Arrows: In the first book I thought it made it clear that ash arrows kill the Fae no matter where it’s pierced. Yet, in this book when Rhys was pierced with one, he didn’t die.
  2. Is having a Mate rare? I thought in the first book it said mates were rare.. But maybe I read wrong. If they are rare, it doesn’t make much sense to make Elain and Lucien mates….

Sidenote/ kinda spoiler : Unrelated, but was anyone else laughing every time Feyre said “my mate”? I found it funny because she said this every two sentences while longingly looking at Rhysand… haha.

I know it seems like I hated every aspect of this book but there are actually many parts I enjoyed, which is why I’m giving this book 3 stars:
“‘Smile again,’ he whispered. I hadn’t smiled for him. Ever. Or laughed. Under the Mountain, I had never grinned, never chuckled. And afterward … And this male before me … my friend.. For all that he had done, I had never given him either. Even when I had just … I had just painted something. On him. For him. I’d—painted again. So I smiled at him, broad and without restraint. ‘You’re exquisite,’ he breathed.”
  1. The side characters: I need more of Mor (haha get it), Nesta, AMRENNN (love her attitude and wished we got to see more of her fight scenes) and Cassian. (I left out Elain because she has the personality of a doorknob). I loved these characters and found myself more invested in their stories than Feyre’s.
  2. Feyre’s PTSD: Hands off to SJM! This was very well written and I really did sympathize with Feyre (until she started acting like she was the only one who was allowed to feel pain and Tamlin was supposed to be perfect).
  3. THE ENDING: The real reason for the three stars. AHHHH!!! Except I didn’t like how the King who was supposed to be a scary villain was really just a big flop and didn’t do anything.
  4. Rhysand and Feyre: They were so cute in the first half of this story! And then it became boring after a while because this whole book was just about romance but I enjoyed  Feysand nonetheless.

“To the stars who listen—and the dreams that are answered.”

I know it sounds like I downright hated this book but I actually thought it was ok. I didn’t love it and I didn’t hate it completely (except for a few parts). ACOMAF is definitely worth a try! Most people love it and I really tried hard to love it too but I guess it just wasn’t for me. I’m still going to try ACOWAR and see if it’s better than this book.

“‘You will feel that way every day for the rest of your life,’ Rhysand said. This close, I could smell the sweat on him, the sea-and-citrus scent beneath it. His eyes were soft. I tried to look away, but he held my chin firm. [...]“You can either let it wreck you, let it get you killed like it nearly did with the Weaver, or you can learn to live with it.’”

book review for a court of thorn and roses by sarah j maas

Book: A Court of Thorn and Roses (ACOTAR)
Author: Sarah J Maas
Page Number: 415 Pages
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: 4.5 / 5 stars

I just finished ACOTAR and wow…. I loved it! I admit I was a bit skeptical of this book at first because I didn’t like Throne of Glass which is by the same author. This book proved me wrong! I found myself invested in it and I couldn’t put the book down. A few things bothered me in this book but overall I found ACOTAR to be amazing and am DYING to read the next book!

Also was it only me that was reminded of Katniss and the Hunger Games in the beginning? Both Feyre and Katniss loved bow and arrows, set snares and hunted to provide food for their family’s table. It was also said that Isaac set snares while Feyre hunted with her arrows. I couldn’t help but laugh at this! Feyre and Isaac were the dollar tree version of Katniss and Gale.

Synopsis: Nineteen year old Feyre has been hunting for years to feed the mouths of her family. One day she brings back a wolf from her hunt. Little did she know that this wolf was a friend to a dangerous and powerful Fae. Demanding retribution for his dead friend, Feyre is dragged into Prythian, the land of the Fae. Over time Feyre comes to love her captor, Tamlin and is willing to do anything for him. Her love is soon put on a test as a deadly enemy arises.

“‘My father once told me that I should let my sister imagine a better life- a better world. And I told him that there was no such thing.’ [...] ‘I never understood-because I couldn’t...couldn’t believe that it was even possible.’ I swallowed, lowering my hand. ‘Until now.’
His throat bobbed. His kiss that time was deep and thorough, unhurried and intent. [...] It was the happiest moment of my life” (Maas 230).

What I didn’t like about this book:

  • Feyre: I could not stand her stubbornness at times. At page 185-190, she irritated me so much that I had to put down my book for a few minutes and fume. Tamlin told Feyre to stay inside the house yet she insisted on leaving it and going against his warnings. Spoilers: This was incredibly stupid. Who did she think she was? She was entering a party filled with Faeries that would shred her neck in a matter of seconds if they saw her. Her stubbornness was too much! Why was it so hard to listen to Tamlin and Lucien? All she is doing is putting Tamlin and Lucien in compromising positions where they have to come and save her.
  • Not much Action: This book lacked action and that is the main reason why I am only giving this book 4.5 stars out of 5. I love romance as much as the next person but not if it's the only thing happening in the first 300 pages of a book. I like my books with fantasy action with only a hint of romance. Spoilers: Even after she was taken captive by Amarantha, there was only action during the trials, which didn’t last too long.
  • Rhysand: Spoilers: Ok I know this will probably change since I know Feyre will end up with him, I did not like him. Besides I really ship Feyre and Tamlin!!! Why does Sarah J Maas always switch the main love interests all the time? First Throne of Glass and now this. Rhysand made for a nice villain and I have a love-hate relationship with him. I love his villain side but I do not like him with Feyre. At least not yet. Maybe my opinion will change in the second book.
  • The Second-hand embarrassment: The second-hand embarrassment from this book was so real that I had to put my book down and stare at the wall for minutes. I literally could not continue reading after these scenes (Spoilers):
  1. When Rhysand went into her mind and spilled her thoughts
  2. When Rhysand made her drink the Faerie wine and entertain the court by dirty dancing

What I did like:

“Because loving Tamlin was the only thing I had left, the only thing I couldn’t sacrifice” (Maas 401).

  • Beauty and the Beast: Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairy tale ever! It’s also my third favorite Disney movie of all time! So maybe I’m a little biased when I say I loved the main plot of this story. I really liked seeing the similarities between ACOTAR and the original Beauty and the Beast. However, at the same time, this book was vastly different from the fairytale and had original aspects that made me really like this book!
At the beginning I was confused as to why Tamlin was being so nice to Feyre and allowing her to stay at his house when she killed his friend but at the end it all made sense.
  • The Trials: I loved the first trial! It was the only action in this entire book and it was written well. The worm scene put me on edge and I couldn’t put my book down!
  • Tamlin: While I wished that he were a bit meaner and more beasty just like the original Beauty and the Beast story, where he turns nice only after Belle changes his heart,  I still loved Tamlin. I ship him and Feyre a lot! Spoiler: Stupid Rhysand...why do you have to come in and ruin this ship?!

“He smiled at me still, broadly and without restraint or hesitation. Isaac had never smiled at me like that. Isaac had never made my breath catch, just a little bit.”

“A Court of Thorn and Roses” by Sarah J Maas is a really good book! I would highly recommend ACOTAR for Beauty and the Beast lovers! I’m excited to see what ACOMAF, the second book, brings!

Book review for tales from a shadowhunter academy by cassandra clare

5/17/2020

Book: Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy
Author: Cassandra Clare
Page Number: 655 Pages
Genre: Fantasy Novellas
Rating: 4 / 5 stars

“Simon knew if he looked up he could meet Isabelle’s ees, or Clary’s and draw strength from them. He could silently ask them if this was the right path, and they would reassure him. But this choice couldn't belong to them. It had to be his, and his alone.”

Only Simon, Izzy and the Blackthorns could force me to read yet ANOTHER shadowhunter book by Cassandra Clare. Surprisingly, I do not regret it. While this book of novellas was a bit too long for my taste, I was glad to be able to read about Simon and Izzy (aka the second best shadowhunter couple of all time.) Although if I’m being honest, this book kind of ruined Sizzy (Simon and Izzy) for me in the middle of the book. I don’t why or how but it just wasn’t the same. However at the end of the book, it was all good. Simon, being my second favorite character in the Mortal Instrument series got annoying after a while and it pains me to say this since I really did like him in the original series.

Synopsis: This book takes place right after the City of Heavenly Fire. Simon Lewis, previously a vampire is now a human who has been stripped of his memories. The past few months have been tough for Simon because everybody expects him to be his old self but without his memories, Simon is having a hard time connecting with his friends. In order to gain some sense or normality, he decides to become a shadowhunter at the Shadowhunter Academy. Here Simon will embark on a journey to join the depleted Shadowhunter forces.
This book consists of ten novellas inside.

Without further ado, here are the ratings of the ten different novellas:

Welcome to the Shadowhunter Academy: 4.5/5
Summary: Simon says goodbye to Jace, Clary, Isabelle, Alec, etc and leaves for the Shadowhunter academy.
I thought this was a solid start off to the book and it was interesting. Simon, with his natural charm, made me laugh. The tension between Izzy and Simon in this chapter really pulled on my heartstrings and I was all here for it! In this chapter we meet Julie (don’t like her), Beatrice (don’t like her), and Jon (don’t like him). We also meet George Lovelace and he is so sweet!
The Lost Herondale: 4 / 5
The novella part of this chapter was really boring but the Sizzy part of this chapter is honestly one my favorite parts in this whole book.
Summary: Catarina Loss tells the story of Tobias Herondale to Simon. Meanwhile, Izzy makes a surprise visit to the academy.
Ok since I already read “Lady Midnight”, I already knew this story so not much surprise there. What really captivated me in this chapter was Sizzy. Spoilers: When Izzy showed up at the academy and told everyone to back off, I was mentally screaming with delight hehe.
The Whitechapel Fiend: 3.5/5
Summary: Tessa Gray visits the academy and tells the shadowhunter version of the story about Jack the Ripper in the 1800s
At the beginning of the novella I was bored because I’ve never actually read the Infernal Devices, therefore I didn’t care about the people in this novella. As it continued, it became more and more interesting and I found myself actually enjoying it! I’ve only read this short novella but I feel like I already know a lot about these characters!
Nothing but Shadows: 4.5/5
Summary: Catarina Loss tells the story of James Herondale coming to the Shadowhunter academy and finding his parabatai: Matthew Fairchild.
Same with the Whitechapel Fiend, initially I couldn’t care less about James. Boy I was wrong! How is it that in a short 20 some pages, I already love characters and I find myself wanting to read more about them? I told myself I was not going to read “Chain of Gold” by Cassandra which follows the story of James, but now I’m not so sure.
The Evil We Love: 3 / 5
Summary: This novella is from Robert Lightwood’s perspective about his time with Valentine and the Circle. Meanwhile at the academy, Isabelle riles up Simon’s classmates to go break Academy rules
To be completely honest, I was dreading reading about this novella. I always found the flashbacks of the Circle to be super boring. At the start of this novella, it completely proved me right and I was practically falling asleep. It did progressively get better and I actually enjoyed seeing Robert Lightwood’s backstory.
Pale Kings and Princes: 4/ 5
Summary: Helen Blackthorn is pulled away from her banishment and is brought to the Academy to tell her the story about how her father was trapped and brainwashed by faeries.
I was so happy when I found out this story was about Helen! It was a fairly good read. The only thing that ruined it was Sizzy. I love Sizzy and this chapter pained me because here is where Sizzy went downhill. Somewhat Spoiler: It was really out of character for Izzy to just show up at the academy and give Simon fifty million more chances. The worst part was that her sarcasm and attitude had vanished. Izzy would never let her guard down this easily. The way she was all smiling and talking to Simon was very out of character. I felt like I missed a whole chapter…. Because in the last chapter she was still mad at him and now she brings out this smiling attitude. Did I miss something or…….?
Bitter of Tongue: 5/5
Summary: Simon meets Mark when he gets trapped in the Faerie world.
I gave this 5 /5 solely for Mark Blackthorn. Oh my gosh this novella literally made me want to jump through the book and hug poor Mark. I could imagine his sad face when he heard the news that no one was coming for his rescue. What I didn’t like about this book was the way Izzy saved Simon. Ok so this was very weird because they were in Faerie, surrounded by dangerous members of the hunt and instead of quickly escaping when they had the chance, they started flirting with each other?! To save them, Mark had to take the brunt. Poor Mark probably got beat up by the Hunt after Izzy and Simon left.  I’m giving this novella 5 stars just for Mark.
The Fiery Trial: ⅖
After an amazing novella like “Bitter of Tongue” I have to read through this? The only reason this novella gets two stars is because of Julian and Emma (even if they barely had lines, them just being there makes everything better).
Summary: In this novella we see Emma and Julian’s parabatai ritual (Yay!!!). We also see Simon and Clary decide to become parabatai.
Ok what even was this novella? Wow Simon and Clary are meant to be parabatai! Everybody saw that coming and it was very obvious from the start. Yet they still made some huge deal over this and made them take some dumb test to see if they were parabatai when it was clearly obvious they were. I don’t even know why this novella riled me up this much but I could find myself rolling my eyes at various parts in this chapter. Especially the part where Simon inexplicably could feel any pain that Clary did. That’s such a cliche.
Also why are Julie and Beatrice becoming parabatai? At this rate why doesn’t Cassandra Clare just give everyone a parabatai? It sure feels that way. I remember reading that becoming parabatai was a rare and special thing. However, by the overuse of parabatai and Cassandra Clare making the whole shadowhunter universe have one, the meaning of parabatai has been washed down. At this point, two shadowhunters who barely know each other are becoming shadowhunters (cough cough Julie and Beatrice). Come on! They’ve known each other for what? A year? And they don’t share some special bond or whatever so why are they becoming parabatai?
Born to Endless Knight: 5/5
Summary: A warlock baby appears on the doorstep of the academy. Alex and Magnus take him in and name him Max Lightwood.
I love this story! It was so precious seeing the whole family excited over the new baby, particularly Robert and Mayrse’s reactions! It was so cute! Beyond that, this was the novella where I felt Sizzy had finally returned to normal. Whatever I said before about Sizzy going downhill, I disregarded those emotions after I read this line: “‘I wasn’t aware,’ said Simon, ‘that there are any other girls in the world but you’” (Clare). Someone pinch me to see if I’m still breathing……
Angels Twice Descending: 4.5/5
Summary: Simon and the rest of his class assends
Am I the only one who really ships Marisol and Jon? Ok this last chapter was a rollercoaster and I’m sad to part with the characters in this book! I actually ended up really liking Julie, Beatrice and even Jon.

Spoilers: WHAT WAS THE REASON CASSANDRA CLARE?!!?! WHY DID YOU DO THAT?!! “‘But there’s something else I’ve never had,’ Simon added. ‘At least until now.’
‘What’s that?’
‘A brother.’”
Be right back….sobbing right now. George’s death was so heartbreaking that I’m just going to pretend it never happened.

What I didn’t like:
  • Sizzy: As I mentioned above, I just felt like Sizzy just wasn’t the same as before
  • Simon constantly compares himself as inferior to his past self: Ok this made me so annoyed. I get it, losing your memories is very hard but did you really have to say “I’m not him” and “I still need to find myself” every other page? Simon is an amazing character but his constant comparing himself to his past self was just plain annoying. I felt like coming through the book and telling him that he is the exact same as previous Simon and that past Simon was not some cool, amazing vampire rather than an awkward, silly one. Here is the book summed up in a quote: “‘Trust me, Izzy. I get it. I’m not him. I’ll never be him.’
Isabelle made a noise halfway between a hiss and a yowl. ‘Would you drop it with this old Simon/new Simon inferiority complex? It’s getting old’” (Clare 385).

What I did like:
  • I have to hand it to Cassandra Clare, she really made novellas interesting. Normally I don’t like reading novella books because they are just a bunch of random unconnected stories jumbled together in one book. This book was different. All the stories were incorporated into one new novel that connects all the stories together!

Overall, this book is pretty good! If you love the shadowhunter world, this book is a must read!

Book review for 1984 by george orwell

Book review: 1984

Rating:
3.5/5 stars

“WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH” (Orwell).

Synopsis: 1984 is about a futuristic novel by George Orwell that depicts a world where humans live in a repressive regime. The book follows Winston Smith, who works for the government as a writer who destroys the past and instead writes propaganda that benefits the government instead. Can Winston rebel and defeat the Big Brother (the government)?

Background: George Orwell had a complicated life. He was born in India to an upper middle class with a limited amount of money. Orwell went to school with a partial scholarship and noticed how the school treated the richer students better than the poorer ones. He grew up lonely and to cope with this, he took interest in writing to convey his feelings: "I had the lonely child's habit of making up stories and holding conversations with imaginary persons, and I think from the very start my literary ambitions were mixed up with the feeling of being isolated and undervalued". Winston Smith was a reflection of himself, plagued with his internal dilemmas. Winston was claimed to be a lonely boy himself just like Orwell: “He was a lonely ghost uttering a truth that nobody would ever hear” (Orwell). Winston was also a part of the middle class (in the book this class is called the Outer Party), just like Orwell. With this social class, Winston faced problems of getting treated very differently than the other classes. The government feared that the middle class was one step away from rebelling, so they treated the middle class differently. This experience is similar to the one Orwell faced when his school treated the rich kids better than the poor.
While writing this book, he reflected on all the pain he ever felt in his lifetime and used it to create a world where freedom is repressed. In his lifetime, he went through three wars, one of which was the Spanish Civil war. During the war, Russia had released propaganda about Spain, trying to undermine the people’s revolution against the government. This serves as Orwell’s main inspiration in the creation of the oppressive government. In the book, the government tries to hide the past and create propaganda that benefits them and at the same time, they are using this propaganda to keep an uprising from happening. Orwell’s firsthand experiences with political corruptness allowed him to reflect on his past to write about 1984’s futuristic world. The government’s motto is: “‘Who controls the past,’ ran the Party slogan, ‘controls the future’” (Orwell).  The government manipulates history by erasing the past and creating propaganda that benefits them. This is similar to what Orwell experienced firsthand through the Spanish civil war. The psychological subtext behind the futuristic world resides in Orwell’s experiences throughout his life with government propaganda and wars.

What I didn’t like:
Considering what a classic this book is considered, I was surprised at the lack of character development. Well, I guess I can cut Orwell some slack since he was practically near death while writing this book.
  • If you asked me to analyze Winston’s character, it would be a very short analysis. His character had so much potential, yet it seemed like I barely knew him. His character lacked depth. Seriously, he was such a bland character and this could’ve been prevented if we just got to know him and his mind better.
  • Half of the novel was basically his secret affair with Julia. This was really weird to read, especially since this lasted for over a hundred pages. Instead, these pages could have explored Winston’s mind more or have him try to undermine the government.
What I did like:
I actually really liked this book and would have given it a higher rating if the main character had more depth. Other than that, this book was great!
  • I loved the ending! *This paragraph contains SPOILERS*. The ending and the message that is given is what honestly salvaged this book. Winston became the very thing he vowed never to become: an obedient citizen. In the end, no matter what Winston did, the government had more power. The government would always have more power and would always stand undefeated. This message left an eerie aftertaste to this book and I loved it. The book wasn’t perfectly wrapped up with a happy ending. It showed reality. In some cases, there is nothing you can do. Someone will always have more power over you.
  • ‘You did it!’ sobbed Winston. ‘You reduced me to this state.’
‘No, Winston, you reduced yourself to it. This is what you accepted when you set yourself up against the Party. It was all contained in that first act. Nothing has happened that you did not foresee.’

Overall, 1984 by George Orwell is a really interesting, eye opening read. What makes this book even more disturbing is the idea that this book was inspired by real life incidents of Orwell’s life (Read paragraph above on background). It certainly makes this book unforgettable!

Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows (Orwell).

“‘At the edge of everything, love and faith have always brought me back, and back to you.’"

Recently I read the last book in the Dark Artifacts trilogy: Queen of Air and Darkness.  Let me just say how heartwrenching this book is! Reading Qoaad was such an emotional rollercoaster and a beautiful ending to a well written spin off series. I must say Cassandra Clare really improved her writing skills a lot since her Mortal Instruments days! In her original series, she lacked characterization buildup but she greatly improved on that in the Dark Artifacts! From the well written development in lovable characters to the amazing plot, she truly outdid herself! Even though Cassie’s writing lacked in the original series, I still loved it The Mortal Instrument’s plot. I never thought that any other shadowhunter series would beat it or that any other shadowhunter character would steal my heart just like Jace did. I stand corrected! The Dark Artifacts is the best shadowhunter series and Julian is the best shadowhunter. After him, I’m a sucker for all the characters equally! Emma, Christina, Dru, Mark, Diana, Kit, Ty, Livvy (here come the tears), Helen, Aline, Tavvy and Gywn have my heart. The worst part of this book was turning the last page and realizing I wouldn’t get another book with these characters, save for Dru, Kit and Ty, as the leads.

Characters:
The characters in the Dark Artifacts were strong, well written characters! Cassie did a great job of making me fall for each one! Here is my top ten characters and some honorable mentions!
  • 1. Julian Blackthorn- “Please don’t leave me in this world without you.” -Julian.
I can’t even form words for how much I love Julian. My sweet Julian makes pancakes for his children, calls Dru his “baby girl”, and loves Emma with all his heart! His love for Emma is beyond comparable! Julian is so caring yet he will burn you alive if it means keeping his loved ones safe. He loves his family and Emma unconditionally and I find that so admirable. That reminds me, in the ending when he realizes he has to let Ty grow up on his own and that he couldn’t always baby them, I just started tearing up. Julian’s so young himself and circumstances forced him to grow more mature. Now he has to watch his children go off on their own one by one. :( Julian is my all time favorite shadowhunter character and nobody will be able to beat him.
  • 2. Emma Carstairs- “As long as you exist and I exist, I will love you.” -Emma. Ahh where do I even start with Emma? I love her. I love her sassiness, sarcasm, witts, and her savageness! To be completely honest, I get tired of books with female characters that are all adventurous and tomboyish and don’t like anything girly. Emma isn’t like that. She’s fierce and aggressive, but also classy.
The one thing I love about Emma is that she’s brutal to her enemies but so loving to those she cares about. She loves the Blackthorns with all her heart and they, her. At this point she is as much of a mother to them as Julian is their father. I live for Emma and Julian protecting their siblings like they are their own children. It’s so heartwarming to see. Emma is one of my favorite Shadowhunter characters EVER! She’s so amazing!
  • 3. Cristina Rosales- “As we all have an infinite capacity to make mistakes, we all have an infinite capacity for forgiveness.’‘” -Cristina. How do I describe her? Christina is just that girl. She was the glue that held Emma together during hard times. She was so strong, pushing aside her own grievances for the sake of her friend. Now that’s true friendship right there! Can I just say how awesome her and Emma’s friendship is?! She deserves the whole world!
  • 4. Mark Blackthorn - “I am no faerie. I am Mark Blackthorn of the Los Angeles Institute. It doesn't matter what they say or what they do to me. I still remember who I am.” -Mark.
Ever since Lady Midnight, my heart fell for Mark! He’s just so pure and wants everyone around him to just be happy! He loves Christina and Kieran with all his heart (and can I just say how unique it was for Cassie to add a polyamorous relationship? I didn’t know much about them until this book and it was very eye opening!). You can clearly see Mark’s development from book one to the end of book three. Mark’s not a oblivious little cinnamon roll anymore. He’s stronger, less reckless and can take care of himself. He loves his family fiercely!
  • 4. Drusilla Blackthorn - “Don’t remain silent about what you want, or you may never get it.” - Drusilla.  I couldn’t pick between Mark and Dru, so they are tied for fourth! I love Dru so much! She has arguably the most character development in the book! Throughout the trilogy, we all watched her grow from the too young to do anything sibling to a strong, young woman with a purpose! Even though Cassie needs to let go of the Shadowhunter series, I admit I’m SO EXCITED for The Wicked Powers where Dru is a main character! I could not get enough of her! I was so proud when she freed the prisoners like Diego and Jia out of jail! Also I don’t know who I ship her with? Jaime when she’s older? Maybe Ash and her? We’ll have to see!
  • 5. Diana Wayburn: “I am who I am because I've been part of your family. Never forget, Jules. The choices we make, make us.” -Diana.
She’s incredible, brave and so, so strong. Throughout all the obstacles in her life, she still made it through to the other side. She loves the Blackthorn kids and is practically family! Her courage and dedication to her passions are so inspiring! She didn’t care to stand up for Faeries in the council hall! What a queen!
  • 6. Kit Herondale: “‘You think you can’t survive without Livvy, but you can. We will go through it together.” Kit’s face was cold; he realized he was crying. “I love you, Ty. I love you.’”
Oh boy here come the waterworks… Kit and Ty were perfect for each other. Kit was there when Ty needed a shoulder to lean on, he dried up Ty’s tears and did whatever made Ty happy. Their ending was so sad (I but it was satisfying. It was a reminder that not all good things last. On a side note, Kit’s powers are so awesome!
  • 7. Ty Blackthorn: My poor Ty. It killed me when he broke down once Ty realized that Livvy was truly gone. I wonder if the Wicked Powers will be about the unbalance that Ty set after he brought Livvy's ghost back. Maybe? Anyways, Ty was a total master at protecting his loved ones with a slingshot during the war. You go Ty!
  • 8. Thule Livvy: “I love you, I love you, I love you” -Livvy. *Sniffle sniffle*
Thule Livvy’s letter was the end of me. Poor Livvy, she lost everyone she loved. However, even through this, she managed to be rock hard, relying on herself. She got back up, fighting for a cause. “I’ve got to make Cameron’s death meaningful”. Even when she had the chance to give up and go to an easier life, she chose to stay. For her world, her fighters and for her Cameron. She is just so independently strong and I admire that so much.
  • 9. Tavvy Blackthorn: “‘Jules,’ he said, his small voice clear and ringing. ‘Carry me. I'm tired. I want to go home.’” - Tavvy. This quote says it all… :(
  • 10. Aline:
“‘It’s what's for breakfast and since I’m not Helen, I don’t care if you starve or eat cheetos for every single meal. (...) all she wants is to be with you guys, and you are not going to make her cry again. Understood?’” -Aline
She deserves more love. She fiercely loves Helen and would travel to the moon and back for her if it made Helen happy. What I love about her is her passion and her attitude. She won’t back down, not if it’s something she really believes in. Way to go Aline!
“‘That was pretty cool,’ said Dru (...) ‘I like the way she stood up for Helen’” - Dru.
Dru took the words right out of my mouth.

“‘Emma. Emma, come back. Emma we can do this. We’ve melted stone. You’ve saved my life. We can do anything.’”

What I didn’t Like:

  • How the Final Battle had no Casualties: I hate it when book characters die but I understand that without it, the book wouldn't be realistic. Absolutely no characters other than villains died in the battle. I mean come on! This is the last battle in the trilogy! It should be worth more! There should be more at stake!
Even though Julian and Emma are my favorite ship in all things Shadowhunter, I wish instead of turning into giants, they would have burned together. “‘No.’ Emma had begun to smile. Her eyes were all fire now. ‘Let us burn’”
That would have been such a sweet ending. Instead it’s weird how after turning into giants, the only thing they lost was their parabatai rune. This seemed like Cassandra Clare was just lazy and turned the book’s ending into a perfectly wrapped gift! In my favorite book series, “The Unwanteds”, at the end of the final battle, multiple loved characters had died and the main character, Alex, now had his dominant arm dead forever. That means that he could never move it or use it. Now he couldn’t perform everyday tasks that he couldn’t do. (I couldn’t stop crying for days when this happened).
I expected to see something similar to happen to Julian and Emma instead of them just conveniently losing their parabatai runes.
  • Too Much TMI Characters and The Ending: I loved in Lady Midnight how we had a brief appearance of “The Mortal Instruments” characters. I was expecting the same to happen in this book.  Instead this should have been “The Mortal Instruments #7: The City of Why Are You Tormenting Us Cassie?” First of all, she should have just made the TMI a trilogy but NOOOOO. City of Glass ended perfectly but she decided to add 3 more books to the series. On top of that, she makes them have a major role in Qoaad. She needs to let go of the shadowhunter world. Even though I’m excited for a series with Dru as the main character, I could have lived without it. It makes everything so washed and wrung out. Nothing is unique. I’m not excited for Cassandra to write another spin off series! This is too much! For all the loose ends in the end of this book, she could write so many more spin off series. The end of a series should wrap up loose ends, not unravel them even more! This was a 900 page book but we made no progress. Christina, Keiran and Mark can only meet in a cabin once a week, Emo Jace and Ash are back, Zara is still rampaging in Alicante and everything is a mess. This could have been a shorter book!
  • Missed Opportunity with Annabel: Come on Cassandra! She’s an awesome villain yet she dies so early on in the book. She dies so easily too! I mean, she’s on the cover and the title is basically her! So why does she have basically no role in this book? What a missed opportunity!
  • How Stupid Clary’s Vision Was: Her vision was about Thule and it had no effect on her or the story at all? It was builded up so much throughout the 1st and 2nd book and I was excited to find out what it was. However, it was a huge letdown! Her vision should have been about something bigger like the final battle. For example, she could have been gravely hurt during the final battle and it wasn’t sure if she would make it or not. Her vision was so disappointing and I felt embarrassed for her. She blew off Jace’s proposal for nothing.
  • There’s Clace, Malec but no Sizzy?!: Why? They had 2 scenes. Yet there so many scenes of Clace. There was plenty of Magnus and Alec, but I won’t complain about that since they deserved their time. But Clary and Jace? They already have their own series, so why do they have such a big role in Qoaad? I would have much rather read about Simon and Izzy, which, tied with Malec, was my favorite ship in the original series. It also gutted me how we didn’t get to read about Sizzy’s wedding. Oh well, at least we got that Malec wedding we’ve all been waiting for!

What I did Like:

  • Julian and Emma: “‘There is fire inside us, Emma, and as it blazes, it burns us, and the burning causes pain—but without its light, I cannot see to draw.’” -Julian
I can’t even explain in words how much I loved this ship!  They were the cutest couple in the entire shadowhunter series! Yup, I said it! They have the purest relationship, and know each other so well! Even though I didn’t like their ending, as I said before, I loved their relationship throughout the book. In Thule, Julian loves Emma so much, he’s willing to give her space, even if it means that she never forgives him.
“‘I still love Emma more than I ever thought was possible. I love her more every day, and more every time I try to stop. I love her like I'm being ripped in half.’” - Julian
  • Lots of Developed Main Characters: Another aspect of this book that I liked was how many characters there was. A lot of the characters were a huge part of the book, yet Cassie developed them all well and made us fall in love with each and every one of them. I found that very impressive. It’s so hard to balance a book, juggling about 10 main characters (not including the villains). My favorite development was in Dru and Ty. Dru grew up to be a strong, independent woman and Ty realized that his sister is gone forever but at least he has Dru to share his grief with. I applaud Cassandra for her great work on that!
  • How Kit and Ty’s Relationship didn’t work out: I know everyone’s going to hate me for this but I’m glad Kit and Ty don’t have a happy ending just yet. Don’t get me wrong, I was sobbing when Kit left Ty and I loved their care for each other. However, especially since in the final battle, no one dies and Emma and Julian get a happy ending, some sort of sacrifice must happen! Otherwise, the book’s ending would truly be a gift all wrapped up in a nice ribbon. We do have Zara and Emo Jace to be cautious of but it doesn’t affect any of the main characters directly. I believe Kit and Ty’s relationship ending was the perfect sacrifice. Besides, their relationship will be all fixed in the next spin off series Cassandra writes.

Overall, I give this book a five out of five mainly because I love Emma and the Blackthorns with all of my heart! I couldn’t stand to give them four out of five because they are the reason why I kept reading this book, despite the many plot holes there are. I would give my heart out for Julian, Emma, Christina, Mark, Dru, Kit, Ty, Helen, Aline, Diana, Gwyn and so much more! The saddest part of ending this series is saying a final goodbye to most of these characters! It truly was a well written book with well written characters! The Dark Artifacts is the best shadowhunter series to date and I can’t wait to see what the future shadowhunter books bring!

“‘I’ve loved you all my life, Emma. And when I felt nothing, I realized— without that love, I was nothing. You”re the reason I wanted to break out of the cage. You made me understand that love creates far more joy than any pain it causes.’ He tipped his head back to look up at her, his blue-green eyes shining. ‘I’ve loved my family since the day I was born and I always will. But you’re the love I chose, Emma. Out of everyone in the world, out of everyone I’ve ever known, I chose you. I’ve always had faith in that choice. At the edge of everything, love and faith have always brought me back, and back to you.’” -Julian
